What Was Israel Supposed to Do?

7 Comments | Posted January 6, 2009 | 03:42 PM (EST)

The government of Israel keeps saying their actions in Gaza are justifiable because they are doing it in retaliation for what Hamas has done. Hamas says the same exact thing -- that they are firing the rockets in retaliation for what Israel did in imposing a blockade and bombing...

I must make a huge disclaimer here before we get started. I co-hosted The Young Turks with Ben Mankiewicz for five years, he still co-hosts the show with me from time to time and we have been very good friends for many years. Ben Mankiewicz now co-hosts At the...

How Israel is Wrong and the Palestinians are Misguided

59 Comments | Posted December 31, 2008 | 08:26 PM (EST)

In my mind, there are two fundamental problems with what the Israelis and Palestinians are doing. Israel is occupying the West Bank (and effectively Gaza because they control the borders, the airspace, etc.). What are they going to do with it -- hold on to it forever? Obviously they have...

America is Primarily at Fault for the Conflict in Gaza

If you're a conservative reading this, I know what you're thinking - typical liberal. Part of the blame America first crowd. How could this war between the Israelis and Palestinians be America's fault?

First, I love America. I chose to be an American. I think this is the greatest country...

Not Another Word on Gay Marriage Until They Execute an Adulterer

The religious right picks and chooses which parts of the Bible they want to apply. And they choose based on which outsider group they would like to hate next. First, they emphasized slavery in the Bible when they wanted to hate black people. Now, they emphasize the parts condemning homosexuality...

Give Someone a Compliment Today

18 Comments | Posted December 13, 2008 | 09:19 PM (EST)

I've realized one of the best ways to bring joy into the world is by complimenting people. Not senselessly, not with obvious affectation, but a genuine, honest to goodness compliment. The biggest waste of joy in this world is a good deed left unrecognized.

It's not like this is some...

As usual, we live in an upside down world where black is white and white is black. I have never seen a clearer example of someone being exonerated in a case than Barack Obama in the Blagojevich case. Yet, today we wake up to the Associated Press headline: "Analysis:...

Barack Obama has decided that he is going to try to shoot the moon. He is going to try to expand the tent and see if he can get everyone to buy into his ideas for reform. If it works, everyone will be invested into the change that's coming. If...

Howard Dean for Education Secretary

Howard Dean was just on The Young Turks, and without saying it (because that is a political no-no), he seemed to indicate interest in Secretary of Education position. His first answer about "educational issues" in the interview below seems like a clear indication of where his priorities lie.

There...

What's more than a little infuriating about Washington is that being right is never rewarded. If you're a pundit who was wrong on the Iraq War, you will always have a seat at the table. God forbid you were right about not going into Iraq, well then you are a...

Presidents Kill People, Especially Bush

It's a weighty job. It's no exaggeration to say that the president makes life and death decisions all the time. We were interviewing Michael Isikoff of Newsweek yesterday on The Young Turks and we discussed this part of his latest story:

As NEWSWEEK reported last summer, President Bush approved...

The Center-Right Myth

We have been hearing pundits saying this is a center-right country on television for the last couple of weeks, despite all available evidence (check out this video for a sample). Newsweek even did a whole cover story on it. CNN even did a poll a week after the election...

Another Silly Mistake by Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin is fond of saying the media get their facts wrong. She often accuses the media of being biased against her. "Why didn't they just check with me first?" is a familiar refrain.

Well, now we have the answer - because if they check with you, you're going to...

Why Obama Should Not Pick a Republican Secretary of Defense
